Discover the giants of the ring. From established legends to the explosive newcomers of the Haru Basho.

The Elite: Yokozuna & Ozeki

The 2026 Haru Basho features a formidable lineup at the top of the banzuke. While the official rankings reflect the January Hatsu Basho results, here are the powerhouses set to dominate the Osaka ring.

The Yokozuna Dual Force

At the very top, two Yokozuna lead the pack with distinct yet equally dominant styles:

  • Yokozuna Hoshoryu (East): Known for his technical mastery and explosive power. Coming off a strong 12-3 record in the Hatsu Basho, he remains the man to beat.
  • Yokozuna Onosato (West): The other half of the top pair, Onosato is a consistent championship contender with a powerful, traditional sumo style that overwhelms opponents.

The Ozeki Contenders

The Ozeki rank is filled with drama and potential this year:

  • Ozeki Aonishiki (West): The story of the season. Following a sensational Hatsu yusho (12-3 victory), Aonishiki has been promoted to Ozeki. All eyes are on him to see if he can secure another championship and eye a Yokozuna promotion.
  • Ozeki Kotozakura (East): A perennial powerhouse, Kotozakura faces tough matches within the rank but remains a constant threat for the Emperor's Cup.

Rising Stars & Upset Specialists

Beyond the top two ranks, several wrestlers are poised to make waves in Osaka:

Sekiwake Kirishima

With an 11-4 record in Hatsu, Kirishima is knocking on the door of the elite. Expect him to challenge the Ozeki and Yokozuna throughout the tournament.

Atamifuji

After a brilliant 12-3 showing and a yusho playoff appearance, Atamifuji is the tournament's wildcard with massive upset potential.

Wrestlers to Keep an Eye On

  • Yoshinofuji: A technical specialist who has been gaining ground with impressive grappling techniques.
  • Hakunofuji: Formerly known as Hakuoho, he brings a strong physical presence and a hunger to climb back up the rankings.
  • Shishi & Oshoumi: Two young talents who have shown they can handle the pressure of the big stage.
